What about a camera cell phone? Mine does pictures at 1280x900 and video no problem. :) Obviously not the best, but for what you describe (aside from the artistic bit) it could do the trick. -

Even the best camera phones on the market are typically no better than 2 or 3 MP (not to mention the terrible quality of the lens and other features). You wouldn't be using your camera for much other than showing pictures on your phone hopefully if you take that route :P
Or maybe a MoBlog or something. -

Well duh, but a lot of the people I know who just want to take pictures of their friends and "stuff" are much happier with a good camera phone than a full camera because they can do more things with it. Plus, I know with mine at least, I can take the images saved onto the SD memory card and upload them to my computer (not that I've ever done that, I don't use my camera at all).
