GC was a great site, nobody is here to deny that, but this isn't GC and it never will be. Despite all the good that existed at GC, there were some flaws. I think, hope, that T9 will take those good things and run with them. I think at the core the two sites are the same, they are (were) both tutorial/community websites, but I think where T9 breaks away is the fact it is a fresh start with fresh faces.
Anyways, to me the forum system is really irrelevant if the site's content and members are a cut above. You can have a thriving community with phpBB, vBulletin, IP.Board, SMF, or any of the thousand other systems out there, but it isn't dependent on which one you use. Its how you use it, what you do with it that counts. If we, the members, do our part by being active and posting actually relevant and helpful content then it won't matter how that content was posted.

I like the different format of the forums. I will say that It kinda feels weird seeing a forum without tons of stickied topics and flashy graphics everywhere. I've heard that the cleaner a place is, the less likely people are to trash it. In the same sense I think that the clean simplicity will create a larger focus on the text/dialog.
I agree with Jazcash that Sigs do give a sense of personalization/ self-identity. But I also understand that the focus is now going to be about "here is how to do this", and not about "here look what I did". The lack of sigs will help people focus on support, rather than establishing an identity/making the site a platform to show off.
The feeling is alot different from other forums, I realize the reason why it actually feels more crowded than typical forums is in fact, the lack of sigs :P. Sigs would tend to take up more than 1/4th of the screen. One thing here that does annoy me is Lots of white. lots of white makes me feel bored personally, but thats coming from someone who has to write lots of papers(college) in M-Word, so I grow to dislike the sight of white burning into my eyes in the late hours as I write papers. -

It also helps if theres a situation like, "Wow, that guys sig is cool, maybe he can show me how he made it". -

Yup. It's nice but it feels more like a commenting system than a forum. But if we can post messages then it's fine with me :) -

Ruuka Mar 31st 2008Well i see there is alot of conversation which is a good sign.
Although i personaly enjoyed the signature aspect of Greycobra for the individuality they gave to the posters, (I will expand on this in a second) i understand where David is going and what he is trying to attain.
The signatures under posts system that Greycobra had in place allowed a person to know right away (in the most part) who had made the post and gave a peek into their abilities as an artist using a format such as Photoshop.
I personaly would look for specific individuals to read their comments and their comments only based on who they were. The Name for me was not enough. In essence, a name does not always mean much though a picture (Sig) is worth a thousand words. By having a signature at the end of the post allowed the reader a quick glance at the abilities and talents of the poster and gave a sence of individuality. Its the same things as two guys haveing the same car but one painting his black with racing stripes and the other guy painting his red. Its a way to distinguish between the hundreds of personalities on the site and to give that sence of individuality. Without them i feel as though we are all just numbers on a site that is very mundain.
Sure there are issues such as lag when scrolling down a page or clutter with multiple signatures, but with the right guidlines in place (file size and number) we could still have the personality with the functionality.
What is going to happen to all the GC fans who loved the way the old community was. I am one of them. I love how T9 is striving to continue where GC left off and take the entity to a new realm in the arts support world, but i think we still need some sparkle on a forum that is a little too grey. Lets get some personality back into who our members are and go beyond just a name.
Post counts on the other hand are deffinetly meaningless. I should know... i had the longest run of highest post count on the old GC. Though i tried to make all my comments meaningful, it still felt like i was trying to make a point. That is a way of showing off that i think we need to leave out of T9.
In conclusion, i would just like to say that we should rethink the signature issue. It may be a step in a direction that will allow some of the old members of GC to have that sence of consistancy and with this new platform we will have a greater community than ever before.
