Firstly: No Mac fanboys please. The reason I don't have a Mac is cost + I build my PCs.

I've had Vista since the beta, and up until a few months ago everything was running fine. Until suddenly it stopped accepting removable storage through USB. Now a series of emails to microsoft later, I was told that I would need to re-install Vista to rid the problem.

Am I missing something? I shouldn't need to re-install a whole operating system to fix a small problem such as this...

So I decided to convert back to good ol' XP. Now I do miss quite a few things from Vista:

    - To install fonts you simply right click > install
    - I have the RAM for it, so it all looks marvelous
    - THE SLEEP FUNCTION

    THE SLEEP FUNCTION.

I think a lot of people take this one for granted, it was the best thing that ever happened to me. I have my computer in the same room that I sleep in, and my case (Antec P180) makes more noise than a blind old woman with a bad leg in a china shop. So with this sleep function, I could re-activate my PC by hitting any button on the keyboard in a matter of seconds.

So this all boils down to:

    Which is better? Any thoughts?

I'm using Windows Vista, but I don't really like all the flashy skins, so I just set the theme to Windows XP Classic theme, so it all looks simple, and my computer loads just a little more smoothly. If I were to choose right now to go to XP, I don't know because I am already used to the Windows Vista interface and options. If I were to pick before I got used to Vista, I'd probably go with XP. People say stuff about Vista being more secure, but I think all operating systems have security problems. Nothing's perfect (not even Mac).

are you sure its an os problem and not a problem with your usb port itself and btw i prefer vista over xp

In my opinion, Vista isn't worth the money.

That said, I have Vista, and would never move back to XP. Vista simply just isn't different enough to be worth an extra few hundred bucks. Just like the new Mac OS isn't enough to support it's price tag.

If you have it though, I'd take Vista over XP any day. For some errors, you would have to reinstall XP as well (and reinstalling really isn't that hard to do, just run a repair really, and that ought to take care of the issue).

I used vista for a while when it was released and due to the poor software support at the time i changed back to xp where i have stayed, vista looks nice, adds one or two features but overall things that were easy to do are now more complex and if something works, dont fix it.

I own a mac but I have an XP desktop which I built myself.
I would say Mac is better with the design stuff and functionality whereas XP is better at gaming and programming. For Vista...I just dont like it. Poor software support and the graphics are like total rip off from mac.

I don't think the Vista look is a rip off of Mac at all. And I agree with Mac being better for design, but what do you mean by functionality?

I'm on a Mac, but I have Vista installed on it using VMware Fusion. I personally think that Vista is one of weirdest things to come out of Microsoft... I've been using Windows since 3.11, and have more or less used every single version since then and — except for Windows ME — Vista is the least upgrade worthy.

If you already have Vista, go ahead and use it, but if you're on XP and happy with what you got I see no reason to upgrade. As Dave said, it's not worth the money.

Well, it really depends on you. IF you ar ea person who tries to stay with a working version of a program and refuse never to upgrade you may run into software issues so stay with XP.If you love to stay updated on ypour programs then go for Vista. IMO its all about he programs.
