    I'm putting together this list to encourage design enthusiasts to give new software a try. Some programs used in graphic design are simply not affordable for the everyday Joe Schmoe, but there are some great FREE alternatives out there! Most High End design products also have trials available to test their software before you decide to purchase.

    Also, remember that if you are a student, you can usually get some incredible discounts on these sort of things!

    • GIMP - Great Photoshop Alternative

    • Inkscape - A program with similar capabilities to Illustrator

    • Paint.NET - Another Photoshop Alternative for Windows Only

    • CinePaint - Image Editing software more targeted towards film

    • Blender - A free open source 3D creation suite (cross-platform)

    I've actually got a legal version of CS3.

    Gift from one of my dad's business partners.

    I think I might give GIMP a go, heard some good things about it.

    i like cs2 the best of all! but i like illustrator cs3 better than illustrator cs2

    I personally don't like gimp, and at the time it was an earlier version of Gimp vs Photoshop 7, but I stuck with Photoshop 7, basically because of the UI.

    Never used GIMP or any of the free softwares, but GIMP seems to be the best choice for photoshopping.

    Heh. I've seen some good work with gimp, but i've always thought of it as Photoshop's mentally challenged cousin.
