   Not sure about the girls though, but it may have to do something with the fact that raising them costs more or some other financial reasons like in India, because of the dower the family has to give for marriage if they have a girl and they also have to pay for the wedding if I remember it correctly

   There are exeptions to the one child policy, for example if you work on a farm you're allowed to have two children. The government has also said that if you lost a child in the earthquake they just had that you would be allowed to have another kid. Otherwise yeah, you're right, one child per family.
   
   I do believe your'e right about the dowry that the female's family has to pay but I think that is starting to shift a little in certain places because those countries (China and India primarily) or starting to realize that the female population is being dominated by the males. With a female shortage like this, they're becoming more valuable so the parents of the female are starting to gain a little more power. The family name is also an important thing and the family most often takes the name of the male. Basically if you dont' have a male, your family name dies. Women also have little to no rights and are controlled by their mother in law which doesn't really help their situation.

   I even remember watching some story on TV about the situation in India that most women visit the doctor regularly to make sure that it's a biy, if it's not, most of them make an abortion, even several if needed, until they get a boy.
   But it's more off topic.
